Deer Valley is located in a great setting in Hershey Pennsylvania with nice views from nearly every hole. Deer Valley is a public course primarily played by locals with a daily fee of $27 which includes a cart.  It’s an 18 hole course which is moderately maintained.  At the time we played, the tee boxes looked like they had not been mowed in about a week and in all fairness, we have had a lot of rain lately but not to the degree that would make the course unmowable.  The greens are surprisingly in very nice condition although slow by most standards.

The one interesting feature on the course that I have never seen before is a void of any sand.  That’s right.  No fairway bunkers or greenside traps.  The course is only about 11 years old so there probably never were sand traps and instead, “grass bunker” of sorts have been used.  These areas are far from closely mown with a juicy consistency of 4 to 5 inches of grass.  I was only in one of these during the day however I found two other lost golf balls while searching for mine.

All of the par 5’s are reachable from the tips for the above average golfer.  One of the more interesting holes is the Par 5, fifth hole which has a sharp dog leg right turn.  There are two ways of playing this hole if you want to reach in two.  You can either take the ball way out to the left and try to get to the edge of the turn or take your drive down the right side and then cut off the turn with your second shot over an out of bounds area.  The accompanying video provides a good look at the hole.

The par 3’s on the course are about average.  There is nothing spectacular about the course as a whole.  The people are very friendly and a group in front of us actually asked us to play through.  You don’t see that too often these days.  I would not consider this course a must play course by any means but if you are in the Hershey area for other reasons, it might be worth the time.
